Summer Travel: Best Art And Music Festivals to the Adriatic Coast

Culture festivals along the Adriatic Coast

If your musical tastes stop at dubstep, you may not find the crowd you seek at these lively cultural festivals, but if your interests span to art, history, dance and theater, you might find a new favorite festival. Here are just a few of the top summer festivals on the Adriatic Coast:


1. Dukatfest – Banja Luka, Bosnia (June 20-24)

Dukatfest is a unique cultural and artistic event in Bosnia and Herzegovina with international elements.  In previous years, the Festival has featured more than 60 participants from 40 countries, making the program one of the best in the Balkans. Apart from the central competitive festival evening in Banja Luka, ensembles give concerts in other cities. The festival opens with a parade showcasing traditional clothes, along with a photography exhibition and workshops.

 2. Festa del Redentore – Venice, Italy (July 17-19)

The Redentore is the oldest continuously celebrated date on the Venetian calendar. Although it springs from religious roots, the three-day festival attracts visitors from around the world on its second night as boats of every shape and size gather in the lagoon between St Mark’s, San Giorgio, the Punta della Dogana and the Giudecca, each holding merry-makers supplied with food and drink. This party culminates in a fireworks display.

3. Grisia Art Show – Rovinj, Croatia (August 9)

Started in 1967, the Grisia Art Show is the longest running outdoor art show in Rovinj. As many as 240 artists including, including academic artists and children, display their work. Through its longevity, the show has become more like a festival than a competition, with artists exchanging experiences and ideas. More than 20,000 attendees visit the show, eying artwork on the walls of the buildings, window shutters and stone stairs, making this one of the most famous art streets in the Mediterranean.

4. Lent Fesitval – Maribor, Slovenia (June 26 – July 11)

Celebrated for the last 23 years, Maribor’s Lent Festival is the largest outdoor festival in Slovenia and one of the largest in Europe. With over 1,200 events at 40 venues, the 16-day festival attracts more than half a million visitors a year with a family-friendly adventure, park, traditional folk art, outdoor theater performances, street vendors with classic cuisine and a wide variety of music.

5. Rogaška Musical Summer – Rogaška Slatina, Slovenia (June – September)

This summer-long series spans multiple genres, from chamber music and opera to Slovenian folk music.
