Šibenik might be the most fascinating Croatian city you haven’t heard of yet.
If Croatians are reluctant to tell you how special Šibenik is, it may be because they’d like to keep this secret to themselves. With larger cities like Zagreb and Dubrovnik still topping classic tourist lists, and islands like Hvar and Korcula attracting beach-goers, the historic coastal enclave of Šibenik — regarded as the oldest native Croatian city on the Adriatic Coast — has remained a hidden gem for those who know its treasures. These include stunning views, ancient architecture, rocky beaches — and perhaps the best restaurant in the country.
It’s best to visit Šibenik in the early afternoon, giving yourself time to wander through its stone streets and bask in the Mediterranean atmosphere before working up an appetite for lunch. (Just make sure you stay for the sunset, best enjoyed overlooking the sea.) Stop and admire the entirely stone St. James’ Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and find a nice place on the pier to spot St. Nicholas Fortress, an imposing structure designed to stop Turks from invading in the 16th Century.
When you’re ready for lunch, we’ll take you to Pelegrini, a restaurant that could easily succeed on atmosphere and views alone, but surpasses expectations with a menu that shows off the very best of Croatia’s specialties. You’ll find seafood, classic prosciutto, fresh vegetables, just-baked bread and a wine list designed to pair perfectly with each dish.
Those with a sweet tooth might also want to save room for dessert. Pelegrini’s menu is full of divine selections, all colorfully presented. We recommend ordering dessert for yourself, although if you plan to indulge in a full cake, we also recommend a hike at nearby Krka National Park!
Although Šibenik is an ideal romantic escape, this adventurous city is also a great place for kids. See our Family Guide to Šibenik for activity ideas, and call us for even more personalized recommendations!
